Book Excerpts

Excerpt 1:

Caleb, true to his word, led her back home where she quickly slipped into the summer dress she’d left on her small back porch.  Caleb smiled down at her, almost as if amused by her modesty.  His hands lifted to brush across her cheeks, and she closed her eyes to bask in the momentary bliss of Caleb’s hands on her skin.

“Let me take you out tomorrow?”

Miranda opened her eyes in surprise and searched his golden brown eyes for confirmation that she’d heard correctly.  She felt her mouth turn into a smile, and her heart executed a flutter that she was sure could not be healthy.  He wanted to see her again.  Well, of course he does; he is your mate!  A sobering thought that her mouse side thought was apparent.  Caleb wanted her and always would, but only because nature had deemed it so.  Miranda wanted love, had dreamed of love.  But did she want to be loved simply because their bodies decided for them?  Was it truly love if she wanted him with every fiber of her being but did not know the first thing about him?  Wasn’t that just lust?

And there lay the root of her hesitancy.  Miranda was afraid that they would mate and he wouldn’t truly love her.

Her mother told her that finding a true mate was dependent on body chemistry and genetics.  The fact that she was a mouse shifter and Caleb was a cougar shifter was weird, but maybe she held some kind of genetic material that would be beneficial for their future offspring.  Whatever the reason, her body clamored for Caleb.  Despite a chemical attraction that would ultimately tie the two together for life, no matter the species of shifter they may be, it did not guarantee love.  Most true-mated pairs were in love, but love was not required to produce offspring.

Miranda blinked and focused her attention back on Caleb, his golden brown eyes regarding her expectantly.  She nodded slowly, accepting his invitation because, despite her reservations about this mating, she couldn’t deny that she needed him. He smiled before brushing his lips feather light against her own.

“I’ll see you tomorrow night at six o’clock.  Be ready for dinner.”

Miranda sighed as she stepped back and closed the door, resisting the urge to throw herself in his arms.  Beg him to take her.

Now Miranda tossed on the bed, her skin tingling with each movement.  Her pajamas lay in a long forgotten pile on the floor, their constraints too much tactile stimulation for her to handle.  What was happening to her?  Of course, on some level, Miranda knew, but she ignored the idea, relegated it to being impossible.  But no matter how she denied it, the truth remained— Miranda was in heat.

Excerpt 2:

Miranda watched as Caleb folded a dark-haired female into his arms.  She went from curious to furious in two seconds flat.  One second she was in the truck, her heart breaking as she watched the love of her life hug another woman, and the next, she was pulling Caleb away from that same female.

“Get away from him!”

Caleb turned to her in surprise.  “Miranda, sweetheart, what’s wrong?”

Miranda stared at her daft mate, rage boiling inside her.

“You are mine,” Miranda whispered

“Shit!  Sweetheart, I’m yours, and you are mine.  You’re being irrational because we haven’t claimed each other.  Now take a deep breath, sweetheart.”

Even on the edge of reason, Miranda realized the truth of Caleb’s words.  Her shoulders slumped, and Caleb wrapped her in his arms.

“I’m sorry, Caleb.”

“Nothing to be sorry for, sweetheart.  I’d like to introduce you to Aspen Clarke.  We grew up together until her parents moved away when she was twelve.”

Miranda pulled back and wiped the tears from her cheeks before extending her hand to the female named Aspen.

“I’m sorry, Aspen.  I’m usually not like this.”  Aspen smiled and hugged Miranda close.  Aspen was a few inches taller than Miranda and boasted curves that Miranda only dreamed about.

“That’s understandable.  It’s nice to meet Caleb’s mate.”

“So, would you like to come in?  I’ll fix something to eat,” Miranda offered.  Aspen looked to Caleb, and Miranda stepped in front, drawing her gaze.  “I would love to get to know Caleb’s friend better.  Please come in.”  Aspen nodded, and Caleb led the way.

Miranda went to the kitchen and was secretly pleased when Caleb and Aspen followed.  Jealousy still coursed through her veins, and she wasn’t certain she could handle them alone together.

“You two have a seat and catch up.  I’m just going to cook something for us to eat.  Would anyone like something to drink?”

Caleb pulled a chair out for Aspen before coming around the island where Miranda stood.  Taking her face in his hands, he bent and kissed her lips.  Miranda sighed and sank into him.  Caleb pulled back, and his face was serious as he studied her eyes.

“Mine,” he finally said.  Miranda felt herself shudder at the authority he projected in that one word.

“Yours,” she whispered.

“Umm, not to break up a moment or anything, but maybe I should go.  I’m staying with Winston and his wife tonight.  I actually just came over to see if I could be readmitted to the pride.”  Aspen’s voice pulled Miranda back from Caleb’s hypnotic golden-brown stare.  She felt ashamed that she was acting so callous toward the woman when she in no way deserved such treatment.

“No, Aspen.  I’m sorry.  I really am, and I promise to behave.  Please don’t go.”

“Oh, I was just trying not to intrude on the love fest, but if you really want me to stay, then I insist on cooking.”

“Why would you want to cook?”

Aspen’s tinkling laughter filled the room.  “I’m a chef.  I love to cook so much that I made it my career.  So, can I intrude on your kitchen and cook something?”

Caleb nipped Miranda on the earlobe, pulling her attention back to him.  His eyes seemed to plead with her, and Miranda could not resist those pleading brown depths.

“I think that’s great if you really want to.”

Aspen came around the island and opened various cabinets, pulling things out as she went.  Caleb grasped Miranda by the hand and sat her on a stool on the other side of the island before joining her on the stool beside her.

“The answer is yes,” Caleb said.  Aspen stopped, and Miranda stared.  Miranda could see the same confusion she felt on Aspen’s face.

Caleb chuckled before adding, “The pride would love to have you.”

“So you don’t think your father will have a problem with me rejoining?”  Miranda could feel the sadness sweep Caleb.  He would probably have loved his father to make that decision, but sadly, he could not.

“My mother and father were both killed in a car accident over a year ago.  I’m alpha now.”

Excerpt 3:

“Well, if there is no other business, I say we dismiss this meeting,” Caleb said.

A shrill whistle interrupted the sound of people standing and shuffling to exit.  Caleb and Miranda’s attention flew to the source.  Her black hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and her crystalline-blue eyes were shooting sparks.  Caleb knew the female as Brenna James, had even spoken to her on a few occasions, but he truly knew nothing more about her.  His father had admitted her and her mother about four years before, about a year before Essence became a member of the pride.  Sadly, Brenna’s mother had died about six months after their arrival.

However, just as his father had with Essence, he didn’t ask questions, preferring to allow pride members to come to him when ready.  Caleb needed to stop that practice.  Essence’s problem taught him that if he wanted to help the members of his pride he sometimes had to be proactive about it.

“I challenge Miranda Sullivan for her position as alpha female!”  Brenna stood her hands on her hips her mouth curled in a moue of distaste as she looked over Miranda.

Miranda’s brown eyes widened, and she looked at Caleb.  He could feel her panic as if it were his own.  Hell, maybe it was his own.  Caleb loved his mate and did not want to change one thing about her.  However, the facts remained that Miranda was a little mouse and Brenna was a cougar.  He obviously hadn’t thought of this possibility.

Brenna barely kept the look of glee from her face as she challenged the little mouse for her position as alpha female.  The mouse’s eyes widened as the implications of her challenge flowed through the stupid bitch’s head.

Yeah, bitch, I’m a cougar, and I will take you out in one little bite.

Brenna could almost feel the power of being alpha female.  But first things first. She had to dispose of one annoying rodent.  Miranda’s whispered questions floated to her ears, and Brenna decided not to withhold a smile.  It was rather amusing.

“Can she do that?”

Not about to lose her audience, Brenna answered the filthy rodent.

“Why, yes, of course I can.  According to the pride bylaws, and I quote, ‘Should the alpha or alpha female of any pride be considered weak or unfit for their duty as alpha, then it is the privilege of the pride members to challenge for that position.”

“On what grounds do you claim Miranda to be unfit?” Caleb growled.

Oh, but he was a prickly male.  Even more reason to rid herself of him as soon as possible after Miranda’s tragic death, besides she much preferred Daryl him anyways.

“Miranda is a mouse.  Historically, alphas for any shifter group, be that wolf, lion, or cougar, has been the strongest of the group.  Miranda, by size and species alone, is inferior in strength, speed, and prowess.  Would any here disagree that Caleb is the strongest male among us?”  Brenna was satisfied with the response, knowing that the entire pride adored Caleb, and it made her want to vomit.  Daryl was twice the man that he was.

“What does that have to do with your challenge?” Caleb growled yet again.  It seemed she would have to speed things up so that Caleb didn’t blow a gasket.

“I’m simply making a point.  How many of you can say the same for Miranda?  How many of you can say that Miranda is the strongest among you?”  Everyone looked to Caleb for guidance.  She could tell many of them wanted to say she was the strongest, but in the end, very few did so.  “There we have it. The stipulation for challenge has been met, and therefore, I challenge Miranda Sullivan for her place as alpha female.”

“What do I do?  I’m not actually too familiar with every bylaw,” Miranda said, her face pale.

“I offer to fight as a substitute!”

Brenna turned to the black-haired female who walked toward the front.  Who is this bitch?  When she stood mere inches away, Brenna bristled at the look of contempt that flashed in her gray eyes.  “What are you trying to prove?”  The gray-eyed female had balls.  Brenna would give her that.  Now it seemed as if another had to die.

“I simply want what is best for the pride.”

Miranda stepped beside the female and placed a hand on her shoulder to gain her attention.

“I can’t let you do that, Aspen.  It isn’t good for you in this condition.”  The girl named Aspen looked at Miranda in open-mouthed shock.
